District K-5 Reading Intervention Plan
-
The Alaska Reads Act is a state law that was passed to help all students read on grade level by third grade. This law requires school districts to develop a comprehensive plan to support reading for students in grades kindergarten through third grade. One requirement of the AK Reads Act is that each school district will develop a District Reading Intervention Plan (DRIP) for K-3 students. These DRIPs have to be approved by the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development.

Southwest Region School district has expanded our DRIP plan to include students in grades K-5. The DRIP plan has a number of components including:
- a literacy screener to identify students that need extra support in reading.
- dedicated time for reading instruction for all students, called Tier I or universal instruction.
- dedicated time for students that need extra support, called Tier II or targeted instruction.
- dedicated time for students that need intensive support, called Tier II or intensive instruction.
- an Individualized Reading Instruction Plan (IRIP) for any student that needs extra support and/or intensive support
- a routine timeline to check on the progress of students and adjustments to be made to the IRIP
- a parent communication and engagement plan
- professional development for staff
Southwest Region School District has an approved DRIP plan. This plan will be adjusted to meet the needs of our students. You can view this plan below.
